Artificial intelligence is reducing the cost of trying out ideas. That is terrific. But lowering the cost of getting started does not automatically lower the cost of finishing well. Nor the cost of undoing a bad decision. In fact, generating more changes with less thought can increase the number of decisions that will need to be undone later. So perhaps the useful metric is not “how much code the agent produced,” but “how long the team took to deliver a reliable improvement and how well they understood it when they delivered it.” And I would add an uncomfortable question: “Who can explain this change without asking artificial intelligence to explain it again?” That question sounds harsh, but it does not require going back to programming everything by hand. It requires retaining the ability to intervene. Because the risk of depending on an assistant is not just that it makes mistakes. It is that, when it does, no one knows where to start fixing them.
