Would you let an AI make a purchase, cancel an appointment, or reschedule one for you? An agent’s autonomy should not be an all-or-nothing switch.
The safest approach is to introduce it gradually: first, the AI suggests an action; then, it prepares it; later, it carries out reversible tasks; and only in tightly controlled contexts does it act on its own.
This way, a telephone agent can check orders or open support tickets without unnecessary access to emails, purchases, or sensitive data. It is less spectacular than giving it twenty tools, but much easier to audit and correct when something goes wrong.
The key is not for AI to be able to do everything, but for it to have exactly the permissions it needs.
