Many companies say they keep a person overseeing artificial intelligence decisions. But being present does not guarantee having control.
If someone receives a hundred alerts a day, works with ambiguous criteria, and challenging the system delays everything, they may end up approving almost all of them out of sheer exhaustion. Oversight becomes decorative.
This ties into automation bias: we tend to place too much trust in a technical recommendation, especially when it appears objective and is backed by a lot of data. And a tool that is almost always right can be more dangerous than one that obviously fails, because it lowers our guard.
